Project title: Regulation of Cryptography: Logical, Legal and Normative Limits
Project description: When questioned about the practical efficacy of proposed mandatory backdoors into encrypted communications, Prime Minister of Australia Malcolm Turnbull responded, “Well, the laws of Australia prevail in Australia, I can assure you of that. The laws of mathematics are very commendable but the only law that applies in Australia is the law of Australia.” This thesis tests the efficacy of Mr Turnbull’s statement by exploring the technical, practical, economic and legal factors that may limit governments’ abilities to control the industry and use of cryptography. It also examines the status quo with regards to regulation of cryptography, and considers whether contemporary cryptographic-related issues are likely to change with technological advancements.
